Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers supports a potential SPFL rule change.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has welcomed the possibility of the Scottish Premier League requiring the use of grass pitches.

The Daily Record reported earlier this week that SPFL Chief Executive Neil Doncaster had discussions about prohibiting artificial surfaces in the top flight.

According to reports, a rule could be implemented by the end of the season, with a grace period for teams to make the necessary changes to their pitches.

Further discussions will take place in the new year in preparation for a possible vote on the issue.

Livingston and Kilmarnock are currently the only Premiership clubs with astroturf, but Killie intends to remove it in the coming years.

When asked about the possibility of SPFL pitch rule changes, Rodgers said in a press conference today, “It’s a constant conversation.” Every coach would undoubtedly prefer to play on a grass pitch. I believe that the sooner that becomes a possibility up here, the better it will be for everyone.

“I understand the economics of it all and what it’ll mean to some clubs. But there should be a certain level and a certain standard that every team, if you’re playing in the top-flight, should have a grass pitch.”

This weekend, Celtic will play on one of the problematic surfaces at Rugby Park. It was the site of the Bhoys’ lone home defeat this season.

There can be no excuses for failing to score three points, regardless of the pitch. Celtic are capable of winning and doing so comfortably. It is up to the team to demonstrate the necessary attitude and application to complete the task.

However, it would be nice to see grass at every stadium in the country in the coming years. Rodgers appears to be among those who have had enough of the status quo.

In other news, Wayne Mardle is forced to apologise for his response to the Celtic vs. Rangers question.
