Celtic star Greg Taylor chooses his “clear winner” for Player of the Year in Scotland.
It’s awards season in Scottish football, and the players’ union PFA Scotland will present the 2023/24 season winners tonight.
Celtic are represented in three categories: Matt O’Riley is nominated for Player of the Year, Amy Gallacher is nominated for Women’s Player of the Year, and three Bhoys goals are on the Goal of the Season list.
O’Riley faces Rangers’ Jack Butland and James Tavernier, as well as free-scoring Hearts attacker Lawrence Shankland.
The Celtic midfielder has been in outstanding form this season, scoring 32 goals and assisting on 45 occasions.
He was outstanding again in Saturday’s triumph over Hearts, laying off a beautiful pass for Kyogo Furuhashi to score before converting a late penalty himself.
Greg Taylor has no doubt about the best player in Scotland.
For teammate Greg Taylor, O’Riley is the clear choice to receive the prize. He told [The Herald]: “In my eyes, Matt is the clear winner. His performances have been so consistent throughout the year and I know it would be a huge honour for him.
“It would be great for Matt that his fellow professionals have voted him as player of the year. It would be fully deserved too.
“Matt has been so consistent for us in big games and scored big goals. He’s also one who devotes his whole life to the game, like most boys do now. But when you see someone get success off the back of that, you can really appreciate it and be happy for them.”
O’Riley responded to Brendan Rodgers’ challenge.
Manager Brendan Rodgers made it clear last summer that he wanted to see more goals from the Celtic midfielder, and it’s fair to say he’s delivered, with 15 in all competitions.
That impact has elevated his Bhoys status to a new level, and he is now being tipped as Celtic’s most expensive export in history if the right team comes along with the appropriate amount of money.
No Celtic supporter wants to see O’Riley leave after how crucial his contributions have been this season, but as is frequently the case in modern football, his departure may be unavoidable.
We should enjoy him while he is here, and Taylor is correct. Everyone in Scotland should be presenting him with all of the accolades this month.
