Celtic told no manager in Scotland has earned the right to do what Brendan Rodgers has just done
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has found himself at the center of debate following his recent comments criticizing some sections of the Celtic fanbase.

These remarks came after a commanding 3-0 victory over St. Mirren on Sunday, where frustrations about fan reactions to backpasses and chants for former player Kieran Tierney were brought to light.
While criticism of fans is often associated with teams underperforming, Rodgers’ case is unique. Since his return to Parkhead last summer, Celtic have won three trophies, with a fourth likely by the end of the current season. This success has earned him both accolades and, according to some, the right to speak candidly.
Rodgers Defended as “Only Manager in Scotland” With This Privilege

Former footballer Marvin Bartley came to Rodgers’ defense during a segment on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard. Bartley argued that Rodgers’ stellar record this season justifies his ability to address fan behavior.
“I think Brendan has come out, spoken with passion, and he is frustrated,” Bartley said. “If anyone has earned the right, any manager in Scotland, then it’s him so far this season.”
Bartley pointed to Celtic’s strong domestic and European performances, highlighting their dominance in the league, success in the League Cup, and promising Champions League campaign.
He further noted that fans’ frustrations during the early stages of the St. Mirren match seemed misplaced:
“It’s 20 minutes into a game of football… At the end of the day, you look at the final result: they have done that, kept a clean sheet, and won 3-0.”
Bartley also suggested that Rodgers’ comments came from a place of passion and a desire to protect his players, who were likely still affected by their recent loss to Rangers.
Celtic’s Strong Record Under Rodgers
Rodgers’ current campaign has seen Celtic dominate domestically and remain competitive on the European stage.
Competition | Matches | W | D | L | Goals Scored | Goals Against | Points | PPM |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Scottish Premiership | 20 | 17 | 2 | 1 | 55 | 7 | 53 | 2.65 |
UEFA Champions League | 6 | 2 | 3 | 1 | 10 | 10 | 9 | 1.50 |
Scottish League Cup | 4 | 4 | – | – | 17 | 6 | – | – |
Total: | 30 | 23 | 5 | 2 | 82 | 23 | 62 | – |
Celtic are also well-positioned to progress to the knockout stages of the Champions League, with just one more win needed in their remaining two group-stage matches.
Moving Forward
Rodgers’ comments, while controversial, highlight his high standards and commitment to excellence. As Celtic continue to perform on the pitch, it’s likely that these debates will recede, with fans and the manager uniting behind the shared goal of further success.
Rodgers’ ability to balance criticism and support will play a crucial role in maintaining harmony within the Celtic fanbase as the season progresses.
