What to expect from Celtic on the last day of the January transfer window.

Ins and outs are expected at Celtic on the final day of the January transfer window, with late deals possible until 11.30 p.m.

So far, the Scottish champions have only signed one new player, winger Nicolas Kuhn from Rapid Vienna, for £3 million, while midfielder Yosuke Ideguchi has moved permanently to J-League side Vissel Kobe for around £870,000.

A second new arrival has been agreed, with Republic of Ireland striker Adam Idah set to complete his loan move from Norwich City after arriving at Glasgow Airport on Wednesday night. The 22-year-old will join the leaders of the Premiership until the end of the season, but there will be no option to buy.

Celtic poised to strengthen attack with Championship forward in advanced talks over loan

Idah has scored eight times this season despite marking more substitute appearances than starts for the Canaries in the Championship. Chris Sutton, a former Celtic and Norwich striker turned pundit, did not agree with the move, stating on X, “I’m not sure with the greatest respect it’s an upgrade on Oh… Idah needs to get away from Norwich and has potential but has had potential for years but he’s 100% in the development category and a long way from the finished article.”

In addition to strengthening his attack, manager Brendan Rodgers is still looking to improve his defensive options, with a late move for a left-back to cover for the currently injured Greg Taylor still possible. Celtic were linked with Estoril Tiago Araujo earlier in the window, but things have quieted down, and an enquiry for Liverpool’s Owen Beck was turned down, with the 21-year-old returning to Dundee on loan, where he spent the first half of the season.

Fresh names have entered the mix on the eve of transfer deadline day, with representatives of PSG left-back Layvin Kurzawa reportedly contacting Celtic to inform them of his availability. The 31-year-old, who has 13 caps for France, the last of which came in 2019, has played sparingly over the last two seasons, appearing six times during a season-long loan at Fulham last season and making only one substitute appearance for PSG this season. He would be an experienced but potentially expensive option for Celtic, having signed with PSG from Monaco for €23 million in 2015.

Wolves’ left-back Hugo Bueno has also been linked, but reports indicate that the Premier League club is unwilling to let the Spain Under-21 international leave during the current window. Celtic will most likely continue to look for a left-back, preferably on loan, until the deadline, but there are no guarantees.

Celtic midfielder David Turnbull linked with move to Cardiff City
In terms of departures, midfielder David Turnbull is close to completing a permanent move to Cardiff City for £2 million. Turnbull’s contract expires in the summer, but the Bluebirds want to sign the 24-year-old during the current transfer window to boost their Championship promotion play-off hopes.

Marco Tilio has signed a loan deal with Melbourne City for the rest of the season after failing to make an impression at Celtic following his £1 million summer move from the Australian club. Fellow winger Mikey Johnston could leave Parkhead on deadline day, with West Brom reportedly interested in loaning the Republic of Ireland international. Italian club Lecce is interested in signing Gustaf Lagerbielke, but injury concerns about fellow centre-back Cameron Carter-Vickers appear to have prompted the Hoops to halt the Serie A club’s pursuit of the Swedish defender. Celtic turned down a loan offer from Greek club Volos FC for James McCarthy, but the 33-year-old midfielder has not played in 15 months and will be free to leave if a suitable offer is received.

Matt O’Riley, a midfielder, will not be allowed to leave unless a major unforeseen twist occurs. Atletico Madrid has already had a £20 million bid for the Denmark international turned down, and while other clubs across Europe are interested, with deadline day bids possible, Celtic have made it clear that they will not entertain any enquiries for their star player in the current window.
