Celtic transfer latest as £16m double deal in works and Mikey Johnston picks new club
Barcelona left-back Alex Valle checked in earlier this week but Brendan Rodgers wants another THREE signings
Today is the Champions League draw, but it remains to be seen if Brendan Rodgers thinks he has a team that can compete.
This summer, Celtic made nearly £40 million in transfer sales after letting go of players like Matt O’Riley, Bosun Lawal, Hyeon-gyu Oh, and Sead Haksabanovic. After turning down offers from Burnley and Sheffield United in the EFL Championship, Mikey Johnston, a Republic of Ireland international, is expected to finalise his £3 million transfer to West Brom.
As the academy graduate looks to launch his career, Parkhead manager Rodgers has approved Johnston’s permanent departure after he excelled while on loan with the Baggies last season. If there are no health issues, the 25-year-old will sign a four-year contract.
With his departure further depleting Celtic’s finances, manager Rodgers is irate and wants the board to spend the money because his team is now weaker than it was the previous season. Arne Engels, a star player from Augsburg, is one player who would add some star power. The 20-year-old Belgian midfielder is the top choice to take O’Riley’s £30 million spot, but the Bundesliga team has rejected two offers.
In order to acquire the £10 million-rated player before tomorrow night’s 11:30 p.m. Scottish transfer deadline, Celts are prepared to break their transfer record and are still engaged in extensive talks. Engels is unlikely to be accompanied in Glasgow by Mateusz Boguszas, though, given LAFC’s refusal to conduct business. Celts are currently evaluating other targets after being in negotiations for a deal worth more than £5.5 million.
Last night, Football Scotland exclusively disclosed that a deal to acquire Alvyn Sanches was once again being considered. The Scottish champions have had their eye on the 21-year-old playmaker for some time; he is estimated to cost £4 million. Sanches, in contrast to Bogusz, is regarded as a player for the future who might challenge Paulo Bernardo for playing time in the upcoming months. Luke McCowan, the captain of Dundee, is still being considered.
