Celtic Women made history on Saturday, securing their place in Round 2 of qualifying for the UEFA Women’s Champions League for the first time in their history.

After winning their first SWPL championship the previous season, the Ghirls have left their mark on the continent.

Yesterday saw Elena Sadiku’s team play FC Gintra of Lithuania in the Round One final, and they emerged victorious 2-0.

With just under ten minutes remaining, Kit Loferski scored the game-winning goal, after Shannon McGregor had opened the score twenty-two minutes earlier. Mathilde Carstens had missed the penalty kick a few minutes later.

Celtic’s historic triumph puts them in the running for Round 2 of UWCL qualifying.
For a spot in the group stage, they will compete in a two-leg tie against another team in the champions’ path. Tomorrow, Sadiku and company will find out who their opponents are. The draw is scheduled for noon CPT.

September 18 or 19 is when the first leg of the tie will be played, and September 19 is when the second leg will be played, one week later.

By progressing this far, the Ghirls have already created history, but they won’t want to end at the final qualifying round.

The Scottish champions will undoubtedly want to advance and compete in the world’s most prestigious club tournament against the finest teams.
