Celtic would sell Liam Scales for the right price, according to Andy Walker.
Andy Walker claims that Celtic will sell Liam Scales, their surprise package of the season, after his meteoric rise into the starting lineup. The Irishman was on his way out of the club after spending last season on loan at Pittodrie with Aberdeen, who were desperate to get the big defender back after a stellar season in red.
Scales has been one of the club’s standouts since Brendan Rodgers’ return, and if not for a defensive injury crisis in August, Scales’ future could have looked very different indeed. After receiving his baptism of fire in a Celtic jersey against the Rangers at Ibrox, the left-sided player has gone from strength to strength, and the Celts now want to deal him in for the long haul.
Despite this, the central defender – who can also play left-back – has drawn interest from elsewhere in Europe, including Anderlecht in Belgium. Celtic’s former European rivals have been keeping a close eye on Scales in the hope of making a January transfer window bid for his services, despite the fact that the Republic of Ireland international only has 18 months left on the contract he signed in 2021.
Rodgers, a fellow Irishman, is eager to tie down the former Shamrock Rovers man to a new contract and work with him again in the future. The manager even admitted that the 25-year-old has been the “biggest surprise of his career” after going from being on the verge of leaving the club to starring alongside defensive stalwart Cameron Carter-Vickers. This new contract will no doubt help to deflect unwanted attention from Brendan Rodgers’ latest coaching triumph, but Walker insists the club would sell to Anderlecht if the right offer came in.
Our former striker stated on The Go Radio Football Show: “The squad’s too thin for Champions League level. I think that has been proven over the five games that Celtic have played. I think they have competed, but not for 90 minutes. And just in general you look at the model of the club. Look at Liam Scales, there’s someone who I think has excelled this season and we are not even halfway through the season. But if someone was to come in with a big offer, Celtic would sell. That is what they have been doing through the years and that is what has made them successful in Scotland.”
