Celtics to Secure Defensive Big Man and Three-Point Specialist in New Trade Deal

Published

on

The Boston Celtics have started the season strong, with an 11-3 record after their first 14 games, looking like the top team in the NBA. As they prepare to defend their title, the team has a solid roster, but there is always room for improvement, particularly in the frontcourt.

To strengthen their chances, the Celtics may need to pursue a trade. Adding a big man could be challenging due to the high demand for such players, but a potential trade could involve veteran center Al Horford.

In this proposed deal, the Celtics would acquire center Nick Richards and guard Seth Curry from the Charlotte Hornets, sending Horford, a 2026 first-round pick swap, and a 2026 second-round pick in return.

Parting with Horford would be difficult, especially since he has been a fan favorite, but his performance declined in last season’s playoffs. Bringing in extra frontcourt support could help solidify Boston’s position in the NBA.

Richards, who has only played five games this season due to injury, has averaged 11.0 points, 10.0 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 2.4 blocks per game. His presence could provide valuable support alongside Kristaps Porziņģis, especially in the postseason. Richards is on a cost-effective contract, making $5 million for this season and next.

Additionally, Curry could enhance the Celtics’ backcourt depth. Known for his 3-point shooting, Curry is currently hitting 41.9% of his shots from beyond the arc this season. As a former Duke player, he would fit well with the Celtics’ emphasis on 3-point shooting and provide solid bench minutes. His one-year, minimum deal means the Celtics wouldn’t face significant financial risk if the move doesn’t work out.

This trade could improve Boston’s overall depth by adding two valuable role players, making it a move worth considering, even if it means parting with Horford.
