Champions League finalists join Newcastle United in race to sign Sunderland ‘whizz kid’
Champions League winners will compete with Sunderland for their young “whizz kid.”
Fans frequently give Sunderland credit for their excellent academy, even though the team has struggled over the past ten years.
The Black Cats produced players like Josh Maja, Jordan Henderson, and Jordan Pickford during their Premier League downfall. These players eventually left the club for a combined total of more than £43 million.
After being relegated from the Premier League, their academy continued to flourish, producing players like Anthony Patterson and Dan Neil who were instrumental in their comeback to the Championship.
Chris Rigg, who forced his way into the starting lineup in the last few months of the season, is one player who appears to be well on his way to developing into a tremendous talent.
After signing a two-year scholarship agreement last summer, the teenager has made 22 senior appearances since turning 16 and has drawn interest from all over Europe.
In addition to Newcastle United and Liverpool, Rigg has reportedly drawn interest from two Bundesliga teams who are keen to entice him to leave Wearside.
Chris Rigg might participate in the Champions League the following year.
Journalist Alan Nixon claims that Borussia Dortmund, the Champions League winners, are “aware” of Rigg’s circumstances this summer.
“Sunderland whizz kid Chris Rigg goes into the shop window for England under-17s this summer – with German giants watching,” Nixon said in a Patreon post.Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen are keeping an eye out for the young player Manchester United evaluated and withdrew last summer.
“Newcastle United is still one of his biggest supporters, but he might receive an offer from overseas first.”
Is the Bundesliga able to lure the 16-year-old?
Chris Rigg may have preferred to remain in England, but he will undoubtedly be considering Jude Bellingham’s success at Dortmund.
Bellingham made his first team debut at Signal Iduna Park, demonstrating their willingness to give teenagers a chance in the first team. Signal Iduna Park is a fantastic place to develop young talent.
With Xabi Alonso having turned Bayer Leverkusen into one of the scariest teams in Europe, the club might also be a tempting offer.
Although Rigg’s spot in Sunderland’s squad may entice him to stay for at least another year, he may feel he can secure more regular playing time in the Bundesliga than he would with a top Premier League team.
However, the Black Cats must bind him to a professional contract immediately because there’s no denying that his market value will soar in the coming years.
