The Sunderland youngster sent a short message to fans after the season had ended

After the 2023–24 season ended, Chris Rigg, a young player for Sunderland, gave some reflections on it.

In their season-ending matchup with Sheffield Wednesday at the Stadium of Light, the Black Cats were defeated 2-0. As a result, Mike Dodds’ team finished 16th in the Championship, marking the club’s 22nd league loss of the year.

Taking to Instagram after the game to reflect on his breakout season, Rigg wrote: “A lot of positives for me this season, however you fans deserved more. Thank you for your support.”

Despite still only being 16 years old, Rigg made his 21st appearance of the season and his 24th career appearance in all competitions when he came on as a second-half substitute for Sunderland against Sheffield Wednesday. In 2023–24, the Hebburn–born midfielder scored three goals in matches against Southampton, Blackburn Rovers, and Crewe Alexandra.

Major English and European clubs are still interested in signing Rigg, a highly regarded youth prodigy who is regarded as one of the best players in the world at his age. Rigg is reportedly a target for several teams, including Manchester City, Liverpool, Newcastle United, Manchester United, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich.

In the midst of interest from elite teams, the player signed a two-year scholarship deal at Sunderland last summer, which was viewed as a huge coup for the team. When Rigg turns 17 in June, he will be eligible to sign his first professional contract. Sunderland and Rigg have reached an agreement in principle. However, there is no assurance Rigg will remain at the club until that contract is signed.
