Chris Sutton and Kris Boyd Dispute Over Penalty Denial
Celtic’s victory over Livingston puts Brendan Rodgers’ side back on top of the Scottish Premiership this afternoon.
And the timing of the victory could not be better. With the Ibrox Glasgow Derby coming up next Sunday, a victory over their rivals will cement Celtic’s position at the top of the table.
However, Celtic’s victory could have been even bigger if they had been awarded a penalty in the first half after Livingston defender Mikey Devlin clearly fouled Kyogo Furuhashi in the penalty box.
It wasn’t a view shared by Alan Muir in the VAR room or Sky Sports pundit Kris Boyd, as the former Rangers player made a bizarre claim about the incident that left Chris Sutton and Robert Snodgrass perplexed.
Kris Boyd makes strange Kyogo claims.
Sutton told Sky Sports, “I think Celtic will feel hard done by I mean I’ve had to look at this numerous times.
“I’m really surprised Don Robertson wasn’t sent over to the monitor to have a look. I think that you see this is the best one.
“There is contact, Kyogo gets to the ball first so I think that’s a penalty, I really do.
Boyd: “You had to look at it numerous [times] and still can’t make your mind up. So it’s not clear and obvious.”
Snodgrass: “That angle there, that’s a penalty. You wouldn’t want that as a penalty? Come on!”
Boyd: “He’s already down before the contacts made.”
Sutton: “Well, he’s not. You’re watching a different game.”
Snodgrass: “You can see the kick there, he takes his leg away from him. Kyogo there, he’s trying to position himself there to hold the ball up and he [Livingston’s defender] takes his back leg away.”
Boyd then rambled on about Kyogo holding his ankle, ignoring the Sky Sports images that clearly showed Devlin making contact with Kyogo’s left knee.
To be honest, Boyd’s perspective is unsurprising. He frequently disagrees with Celtic’s decisions (or lack thereof) and courted controversy with his punditry views.
But for the time being, Celtic can concentrate on next week and prepare for a huge game at Ibrox, ensuring that their best players are fit and ready for what will undoubtedly be a pivotal moment in the title race.
