Celtic are now preparing to bounce back in the Champions League after a nightmare game last time out.

All eyes will be on Brendan Rodgers, who took a lot of verbal abuse for Celtic’s humiliation against Borussia Dortmund.

It’s understandable and even acceptable to lose a Champions League game; everyone understands that, but it’s the way it’s happening.

Celtic conceded seven against Dortmund, and the number could and should have been higher.

However, this is not the first time the Bhoys have conceded a high number of goals in Europe’s top competition under Rodgers.

Return to PSG, home and away, Barcelona, and even Atlético Madrid, as happened last season. It’s all one unwelcome common theme.

Celtic supporters will judge whether Brendan Rodgers learned his lesson against Atalanta.

Celtic's upcoming UCL game

Chris Sutton doesn’t mind Celtic’s positive mindset in terms of believing they can win big European games, which he felt was portrayed before Dortmund.

At the time, the team had just played an incredible game away at St Johnstone before being dealt a massive blow.

Sutton believes Celtic fans will decide whether Rodgers has ‘learnt any lessons’ from the Dortmund humiliation because he has had a cloud over his head for several years, as he told Sky Sports Football (20/10/24 at 11:10 am).

“After the walloping they had in Dortmund, it’s going to be a big talking point as to how Celtic set up in Italy against Atalanta because Atalanta are an aggressive team, they will attack Celtic ,” Sutton stated.

“Will Celtic be a little bit more pragmatic?” asked Sutton, and Kris Boyd inquired, “How do they do that?”

The former Bhoys striker added: “I didn’t mind the mindset they went into the game with Dortmund and thought that they could go toe-to-toe. In-game, they didn’t adapt in the first half and they didn’t adapt quickly enough. There is nothing wrong with shutting up shop and having a really tight midfield. And not letting the opposition play through you. I think Celtic got sucked in a little bit. They had a bad first half and it could have been anything in the second half. Certainly, in European competitions, and this is what has been levelled at Brendan Rodgers over the years, not just this game against Dortmund, is that he has been too attack-minded in Europe. The truth of it is that Celtic fans will be looking at this game and seeing whether Celtic have learnt any lessons from the performance against Dortmund. You have to have your principles of play, but certainly Celtic were too easy to play through, especially that midfield area.”

Brendan Rodgers will not like the referee appointed for the Atlanta game.

Celtic will travel to Italy in the hopes of proving the doubters wrong and causing an upset, which will only happen if it does.

Let’s be honest: the team will need some luck, and Rodgers will be hoping for it now more than ever.

Irfan Peljto has been appointed as the referee for Atalanta’s match against Celtic, which the man in the green and white dugout will not like.

The official in question was in charge when the team was beaten 2-0 by Feyenoord last season, and the away side received two red cards (Gustaf Lagerbielke and Odin Thiago), so let’s hope history does not repeat itself.
