Chris Sutton Lambasts Celtic’s Penalty Record
Celtic’s recent 1-1 draw with Motherwell at home has raised concerns about the team’s performance, particularly from the penalty spot.
Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has voiced these concerns, emphasising the team’s struggles in converting penalties.
Luis Palma’s missed penalty in the second half against Motherwell was a significant moment in the match, marking Celtic’s third penalty miss of the season.
Although David Turnbull managed to score from the spot later in the game, it wasn’t enough to secure a win as Motherwell equalised shortly after.
This inability to capitalise on penalty opportunities is becoming a worrying trend for Celtic.
Sutton, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live Sport’s 606 show, directly addressed the Celtic fans, questioning if they are worried about the team’s current form after he addressed the Hoops’ poor form from the penalty spot. He said:
“They can’t take penalties, Celtic, although they did score one eventually. They missed the first one. Poor penalty record.
“Were you at Celtic Park? Are you worried? Is the team a little flat this season?”
Celtic’s upcoming trip to Lazio in the Champions League, followed by a domestic clash with St Johnstone, will be critical. These matches will not only influence their standing in Europe but also set the tone for the remainder of the season. The pressure is on to address the attacking issues and improve the team’s consistency, particularly in high-stakes situations like penalties.
