As Celtic fans, we are proud to have seen some of the world’s best players wear the green and white Hoops.
From Jimmy Johnstone to Billy McNeill, Paul McStay, and Henrik Larsson, Celtic fans have witnessed some of the best players in the game ever grace the Parkhead turf.
Many have gone on to pursue their careers elsewhere, while others have joined Celtic after enjoying success at other clubs.

That was the case with Paul Lambert. The former Celtic captain had a great deal of success at Borussia Dortmund before moving to Parkhead for £2 million in November 1997, prompting Chris Sutton to name him one of the top five British footballers to have ever played abroad.

Sutton stated in [It’s All Kicking Off] “So the best five British footballers to play abroad.” Paul Lambert finished in fifth place.

“My former Celtic teammate moved from Motherwell to Borussia Dortmund, where he played an important role in the club’s Champions League victory.
“So Paul Lambert at number five.”
Sutton then names his remaining four players: Steve McManaman (4th), John Charles (3rd), Gareth Bale (2nd), and Chris Waddle (1st).
Lambert’s move to Celtic proved fruitful after he helped Dortmund win the European Championship.
Lambert went on to win three more league titles, three Scottish Cups, and two League Cups after stopping Rangers’ bid for ten consecutive victories.

Lambert, who helped Celtic win their first treble since the Jock Stein era in 2001, also led the team to the UEFA Cup Final in Seville in 2003.

Lambert will go down in Celtic history as one of the club’s legends, and it’s no surprise Sutton bestowed this latest honour on the 54-year-old.
