Clear front-runner for Dan Ashworth replacement at Newcastle United emerges
Reports state that Crystal Palace manager Dougie Freedman has been selected by Newcastle United as their top contender to succeed Dan Ashworth.
When the 53-year-old announced his intention to leave, Toon executives wasted no time in searching for a replacement sporting director. After putting Ashworth on gardening leave, Manchester United is still negotiating over a settlement and may take Newcastle to court.
At first, the Magpies wanted to pay him £20 million to end his contract early. Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the Red Devils’ minority owner, has expressed his displeasure with the situation in public on multiple occasions, most recently during the London Marathon.
According to a February statement from Newcastle, the search for Ashworth’s replacement got underway right away. It is understood that interviews have been conducted recently and are almost finished.
Paul Mitchell, the former head of Monaco and Tottenham Hotspur who was connected to Man United prior to Ashworth’s departure, is one option. Tiago Pinto, the former head of Roma, has also been brought up after he left the Stadio Olimpico earlier this year.
