Colts 2nd-year tight end Jelani Woods’ initial hamstring injury could ultimately end up being season-ending.

According to his head coach Shane SteichenIndianapolis Colts tight end Jelani Woods has suffered a setback during his rehab from a hamstring injury—with his other hamstring.

His availability for the remainder of the season is currently uncertain (via The Athletic’s James Boyd):

The 2nd-year tight end has yet to play a snap this season for the Colts as he re-aggravated a pulled hamstring injury late in camp and has spent the entire season on injured reserve.

While the Colts are deep at tight end, it’s still a big loss to that positional unit as Woods, at a listed 6’7,” 253 pounds, has a unique size and speed combination (*4.61 forty time):

Last season, Woods had 25 receptions for 312 receiving yards (12.5 ypr. avg.) and 3 touchdown receptions—including 4 receptions for 20+ yards, during 15 games.

Even though Woods had a limited number of receptions, the ones he did tended to have a key impact on each game respectively.

At his sheer size, he’s a special athlete and if nothing else, would’ve served as a big red zone target for starting quarterback Gardner Minshew and the Colts passing offense driving towards the goal line—and a potential down the seam option at tight end.

It’s obviously a tough update for the Colts’ 2022 third round pick as it’s starting to shape up like his initial hamstring injury could be ultimately season-ending after all, and 2023 may be a lost year for his growth, development, and any potential production.
