Eliezer Mayenda joins Hibs on a last-minute loan deal from Sunderland.
Hibs have secured a last-ditch loan deal for Sunderland’s Eliezer Mayenda.
His arrival for the remainder of the season comes after Harry McKirdy returned to Swindon Town on loan. Nick Montgomery moved quickly on deadline day to facilitate a deal for Mayenda, the Black Cats’ second signing of the day after Nectar Triantis arrived at Easter Road in the afternoon.
Following McKirdy’s departure, the Hibs manager was eager to add another attacker and has been keeping an eye on the 18-year-old Spanish player. He spoke with Mayenda earlier in the day and worked out a plan for the rest of the season.
“Eliezer is a player we’ve been monitoring and once the interest came in for Harry, we had a list of potential replacements on our recruitment list,” Montgomery told the club’s official website. “With only a few hours remaining, we called Sunderland, and I spoke with both the player and the club. After discussing his options with his representatives, he chose to join us until the end of the season. He’s a powerful, attacking player with plenty of energy. Who is capable of playing both centrally and wide.
“At 18, he has already played Championship football and is well-regarded at Sunderland, with a bright future ahead of him. He will complete our January recruitment, providing more depth and attacking options to the squad.”
Hibs now have three deadline arrivals, with Mayenda joining Triantis and Bournemouth defender Owen Bevan in heading north.
