Idrissa Gana Gueye has joined Senegal’s squad for AFCON.

Idrissa Gana Gueye has joined Senegal for their African Cup of Nations defence.

The midfielder finished his treatment for a calf injury at Everton before departing for the tournament. Gueye missed the Toffees’ previous three games after limping off in a 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur before Christmas.
However, the 34-year-old has now travelled to AFCON as Senegal prepares to defend the title they won two years ago. The Lions of Teranga are one of the favourites to win the tournament for the second time.

The Senegal FA confirmed that Gueye joined the rest of the squad over the weekend and was photographed during training. The former PSG player was then an unused substitute in Senegal’s 1-0 friendly win over Niger before travelling to Ivory Coast to defend their AFCON title.
Gueye has been a key player for Everton this season, appearing 18 times and scoring once. However, if Senegal advances to the final on February 11, Sean Dyche’s side will have to deal with Gueye for up to six matches while he is on international duty.

Everton return to action on Sunday when they host Aston Villa at Goodison Park (14.00 GMT).
