Everton star proved to Dyche why he cannot be a starter in 2024 after Spurs defeat
Everton, on the whole, can feel very proud of their performance away to Tottenham Hotspur yesterday.
Despite a shaky start that saw them fall behind by two goals early on, their reaction was extraordinary and unlike anything the travelling fans had seen from their team in recent years.
They fought hard to come back and can feel disappointed that they didn’t, with Andy Grey even weighing in on what the Toffees ‘deserved’.
However, it was not a particularly impressive afternoon, and the outcome was clearly disappointing.
Even if he only played 24 minutes, it could be argued that Idrissa Gana Gueye’s underwhelming performance stood out even more.
His culpability in midfield, combined with his ageing body, may have demonstrated to Sean Dyche why he cannot be a starter in 2024.
With their financial situation still a little hazy, it remains to be seen whether that is a situation that can be resolved in January or next summer.
How did Idrissa Gana Gueye perform for Everton against Tottenham?
Although it may appear harsh to criticise the Senegal international for what was ultimately a brief appearance on the pitch, it was what he did during his brief appearance that led me to this conclusion.
After all, he is a major source of concern in the engine room, as he is prone to losing control of critical areas. Even if he consistently wins the ball, it cannot compensate for his culpability at times.
Yesterday was no exception, as the 34-year-old would only complete five passes with a 63% success rate. This inaccuracy cost him as well, as he was caught off guard for the second goal, which Heung-min Son tapped in after Jordan Pickford’s poor save.
While Gueye’s profligacy in possession is often offset by his defensive work, given his limited playing time, it was difficult for him to shine in that area.
And, while he did make one tackle, he was also dribbled past once, losing 50% of the two duels he competed in and having fewer touches (9) than his custodian (45), according to Sofascore.
What really exacerbates his weakness and demonstrates why he shouldn’t start in 2024 is the booking he received. An unnecessary challenge that resulted in his injury and removal, such unreliability cannot be tolerated in the starting lineup.
