“Exceptional,” according to Rodgers’ first impression.
BRENDAN RODGERS admitted he was delighted with Celtic’s first impression as they overcame DC United 4-0 in Washington in the early hours of the morning.
Matt O’Riley, the Hoops’ captain for the day, scored twice in the first half against the wide Bhoys. Mikey Johnston and James Forrest scored two more after the break.
Rodgers stressed the importance of his players’ first touch on a shaky playing surface.
His team responded with some sweeping and accurate passing right away, sweeping aside their MLS opponents as the champions prepared for a new season in the domestic and European leagues.
The Irishman smiled after a successful day at work, as thousands of Celtic fans gathered in the American capital to cheer on their team.
Rodgers stated, “I told the players that this is a game to demonstrate how technically proficient you are. There are no excuses, just like when we played Kilmarnock on the astroturf pitch to win the title.
“We’re here to improve our physicality and tactical skills, but first and foremost, let’s get your first touch – because the first touch is the hallmark of a great player.
“And, on this occasion, it was really, really impressive.”
In an interview with Celtic TV, the Celtic manager added, “I thought we pressed the game so well.” From the first whistle, every player was in contention.
“They were taking the final step to win the ball.” That accelerated our offensive play.
“Some of our football on a very difficult surface was excellent. We defended when it was necessary.
“Our physicality was really good at this stage and where we are at.”
Rodgers continued, “Across the board, we had some young players coming in and they did extremely well.
“It’s been a difficult week for them because they’ve worked long hours in the hot sun.
“To come here and finish the week like we did and score the goals that we did, and they were really good goals, and we had a lot of other opportunities as well.
“We moved some of the young people who had performed well in training into the structure, and they received their reward by playing the games.
“It is another step for us.”
The tour will conclude with a Battle of Britain clash against Pep Guardiola’s English champions Manchester City in North Carolina on Wednesday, followed by a match against Chelsea on Saturday.
