Fabrizio Romano provides an update on Newcastle United’s pursuit of Everton star Amadou Onana, amid FFP details.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle United may be unable to pursue a move for Amadou Onana because the Everton midfielder is “very expensive”.

The transfer expert stated in his Daily Briefing column on Sunday (21 January) that Newcastle is one of “multiple clubs” interested in Onana.

However, due to the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules, it is believed that super-rich Newcastle will delay making a move this month, with a summer approach more likely.

Bargaining power

Everton have no need to sell prized assets this month, even though their financial woes have been well documented in recent years.

There is still significant uncertainty surrounding 777 Partners’ takeover of Goodison Park, which could have an impact on player sales this summer.
Onana would cost a lot of money for Everton, but he is more needed than ever right now in the fight against Premier League relegation.

Manchester United and Chelsea are among the other clubs linked with Onana, who has a contract until June 2027.
That gives Everton significant bargaining power when it comes to negotiating a fee, but hopefully it does not come to that.

The hope is that new owners will be in place by the summer, allowing the club to focus on strengthening rather than weakening its squad.

Finally, if a large enough bid comes in and the player requests to leave, the Toffees will have a big decision to make in the summer.
