Coventry City won their second consecutive game for the first time since October on Tuesday night with a narrow 1-0 win over Plymouth Argyle.

Haji Wright’s fifth Championship goal of the season gave Mark Robins’ men all three points at the Coventry Building Society Arena after a rather quiet contest. The win lifts the Sky Blues up to 15th in the table – nine points above the relegation zone.

Following a very quiet first 45 minutes, both teams began to take risks in the second-half. Tatsuhiro Sakamoto was unfortunate to see his effort strike a defender after Wright blazed over from inside the box.

Argyle were left furious with the decision after the ball appeared to leave the field before Van Ewijk crossed the ball. However, the linesman saw no wrongdoing and the goal stood.

Here is how CoventryLive rated the Sky Blues…

Player ratings

Brad Collins: Didn’t need to do too much due to Plymouth’s failure to get many shots on target. Three straight clean sheets since coming in. 6

Milan van Ewijk: One of City’s best players on the night. Kept Bali Mumba quiet, forcing Plymouth into a change, and was a constant threat down the right. But like many of the balls played, lacked the final touch in the final third. 7

Bobby Thomas: Patrolled the backline rather well and made a last ditch challenge to put Finn Azaz off when he was through on goal. Always an open for Collins when playing out of the back. Another solid display. 6

Liam Kitching: Managed Plymouth’s attack well and often came deep to start playing out from the back. Came up good when the visitors threw the kitchen sink. 6

Jake Bidwell: Got forward down the left well in the opening stages but was forced to deal with Plymouth’s danger man Morgan Whittaker. Defensively solid in the second half. 6

Josh Eccles: Put in the hard yards in the midfield and helped City dominate the physical side in the middle of the park. However, the lack of creativity in midfield hindered the Sky Blues going forward. 6

Ben Sheaf: Came close to adding to his goal on Saturday with two attempts within a matter of minutes. Never stopped running and put in another good shift. 6

Jamie Allen: Got the furthest forward out of the midfield three but wasted a number of opportunities when in a position. Controlled the game and made the relevant fouls when needed to break up play. 6

Tatsuhiro Sakamoto: Endured a quiet opening 45 minutes but grew into the contest after half-time. Lacked the confidence to go at Joe Edwards and was replaced by O’Hare when he was perhaps at his best. 5

Haji Wright: Struggled to make an impact in the game but was in the right place at the right time to open the scoring. His first goal at home since October. The American caused Plymouth problems all night. 7

Matty Godden: Attempted to run off the shoulder of the last defenders countless times in the first-half but we didn’t see much of it after half-time. A nuisance for the Argyle defence before coming off. 6

SUBSTITUTES

Callum O’Hare (for Tatsuhiro Sakamoto, ’63): His introduction got the supporters behind the team after the hour mark and while he didn’t play a part in the winner, his introduction made Coventry more attacking. 5

Ellis Simms (for Matt Godden, ’81): Held the ball up superbly and his physical presence frustrated Plymouth. Perhaps could have done better when inside the box but did the jon. 5

Yasin Ayari (for Jamie Allen, ’81): Missed a chance from close range moments after coming on but ran his socks off in the dying minutes. 5

Joel Latibeaudiere (for Milan van Ewijk, ’81): Solid in defence. Exactly what you want from a defender when holding onto a lead. Not used: Wilson, Binks, DaSilva, McFadzean, Kelly
