Following playoff loss, the Cleveland Browns undergo a major staff overhaul.

Following their playoff loss, the Cleveland Browns made significant changes to their coaching staff. Offensive Coordinator Alex Van Pelt, a key figure on the team since 2020, has left the Browns, though it is unclear whether he was fired or chose to leave. His departure follows an injury-plagued season that resulted in a 7-10 record.

Browns Shake Up Coaching Staff Following Wild Card Loss

In addition to Van Pelt’s departure, two other coaches were let go. Running backs coach Stump Mitchell, who had been with the team since 2019, was fired, and tight ends coach T.C. McCartney’s contract was not renewed. These changes are part of a broader evaluation strategy led by Head Coach Kevin Stefanski, who orchestrated similar moves last season, resulting in improvements in defence and special teams with the addition of new hires.

The Implications of Overhaul

Despite significant coaching changes, Stefanski has led the Browns to the playoffs twice during his four-season tenure. Despite rotating through five quarterbacks during the 2023 season, the team’s offence ranked 13th in total yards and 10th in scoring. Stefanski’s recent staff overhaul may be viewed as a strategy to infuse new ideas into his offensive staff, with the goal of building an offence around quarterback Deshaun Watson and overcoming the challenges of the previous season.

What comes next for the Browns?

As the Browns progress, they are expected to make new hires in the coming days. The focus is now on Defensive Coordinator Raheem Morris, who is being considered for head coaching positions elsewhere in the NFL. This move may further shake up the Browns’ coaching staff. Stefanski’s adaptability and knack for selecting capable assistants may be critical in navigating these changes and guiding the Browns to success.
