Rangers favourite left sickened as he concedes Scottish Premiership title to Celtic
Derek Ferguson has given up the SPFL title to Celtic, but he is still confident that Rangers can win the Scottish Cup.
The Light Blues “threw it away” with their shocking loss to Ross County, which was followed by a goalless draw in the twice-rescheduled trip to Dens Park to play Dundee. The former Ibrox midfielder detests admitting the league is probably out of reach.
With the last Old Firm derby at Parkhead to come, Philippe Clement’s team is still within three points of Brendan Rodgers’ Hoops. However, they could be looking for dropped points throughout the city given their goal-difference disadvantage of five.
Ferguson, though, is looking forward to a “mouthwatering” cup final with the same opponents following the shocking revelation that more than 20 years have passed since the iconic match was played as a Glasgow derby.
“We can definitely do the double; I’m fairly certain of it.” I’m excited for the cup final, he revealed to Ibrox News in an exclusive interview.
We held the league in our hands, but we essentially threw it away in the two games against County and Dundee. To be honest, even though I detest saying it, I don’t think we will win the league.
But I really can’t wait for the cup final. It is scheduled to begin at three o’clock on Saturday, May 25, a mouthwatering Saturday afternoon.
We haven’t had one in 22 years, and I believe Ally from Coisty told me about it a few days ago when I found out. That it had been that long was beyond belief.
Brendan Rodgers between Philippe Clement and Rangers treble
Rangers could surprise everyone by defeating Celtic a second time and reclaiming the title at Ibrox, but it’s also possible that the Bhoys will lose points while Rangers win them all.
Although Michael Beale’s early form indicated the race would be decided well before the split, Clement deserves praise for winning the championship so close to the finish line. A monumental victory at Parkhead, which would be Clement’s first in almost four years, could still turn the tide.
But in late February and early March, just when Rodgers and his team appeared to be faltering, the Light Blues were unable to capitalise and went out of form, possibly leaving the historic occasion at Hampden as the last chance to win a trophy.
