Sunderland fans should be excited if their club can secure the signing of highly rated Andrey Santos from Chelsea.

If Sunderland manage to make Chelsea’s Andrey Santos their next big signing in January, supporters of the Black Cats should get excited about their new man.

The Brazilian midfielder made the move to Chelsea last year in January, after impressing for Vasco da Gama in the Campeonato Brasileiro Serie B as a teenager.

He caught the eye of several top teams before joining Chelsea, with teams like Barcelona, PSG, and Newcastle all reportedly interested in the then-18-year-old midfielder.

However, it was the Blues who would win the signature of the teenager, paying a reported fee of £13 million to bring the Brazilian to Stamford Bridge. He joined up with Chelsea in the summer after spending the second half of the season back on loan at Vasco, before being sent to Nottingham Forest in an ill-fated loan spell.

Chelsea recently recalled Santos from his loan deal after making just two appearances for the Reds, with several clubs rumoured to be having a look at the Brazilian, with a view to a temporary loan deal being completed during the January transfer window

Graeme Bailey on HITC has reported that Sunderland are one of the clubs interested in the Brazilian, with a six-month loan deal the most likely transfer for the Chelsea man.

With Jobe Bellingham rumoured to be on his way out of the club, Santos could be a ready-made replacement for the English midfielder, who has reportedly been subject to interest from local rivals Newcastle United in recent weeks.

While Santos would not be a long-term replacement for Bellingham, he could help the team carry their momentum into the second half of the season and keep their place in the play-off places as they aim to return to the Premier League.

However, Sunderland will need to fight off interest rom Hull City and West Bromwich Albion to sign the talented youngster this January.
With Santos described by Juninho as “a monster” and Tim Vickery as “a box-to-box midfielder who has a goal for him”, you’d forgive Sunderland fans for getting excited about their potential signing.

The talented midfielder has been lauded by legends like Juninho since his time in Brazil, where he scored 8 times in 33 matches at just 18 years of age. His eye for goal is something that Sunderland needs, as they have the joint-least goals scored out of all the top six sides this season (36, tied with West Brom).

A scout report on the midfielder described him as an intelligent player who thrives under pressure and has an excellent eye for a pass in any situation. He is a creative midfielder who enjoys driving forward and creating opportunities for other attackers, with the hope of unlocking the goalscoring potential of players such as Jack Clarke and Abdoullah Ba while also scoring himself.

With only Clarke consistently finding the net for the Black Cats this season, Sunderland could benefit greatly from a midfielder who can both create and score.
He does operate in similar spaces to Bellingham, so Mick Beale will need to figure out how to fit both men into his team if they are both on the roster by the end of January.

However, if he can get Santos to work in a talented Sunderland squad, it could give them the push they need to finish in the play-offs for the second year in a row and bring even more excitement to the Black Cats fans this season.
