‘I’ll never forgive you’ – Peter Schmeichel’s emotional reaction to Celtic’s Dortmund disaster
After Daizen Maeda saved Emre Can’s penalty kick in the seventh minute, Celtic had momentary relief. But, they soon fell behind again and were unable to stop a strong Dortmund team, who had taken the lead at halftime thanks to a hat-trick from Karim Adeyemi. Felix Nmecha’s late goal and two goals from Serhou Guirassy before the half completed the score.
After the defeat, Peter Schmeichel, the father of current Celtic goalie Kasper and a former Manchester United goalkeeper, made an emotional plea to his son and cautioned Rodgers’ team to move on soon.
He thought, “It really is difficult.” “Regardless of the situation your kids are in, you always want the best for them. It was just one of those days that defy explanation. There could have been a few more shots given how many were taken and how many of them were used. It was just one of those days where you couldn’t get close enough to it, as Callum McGregor had previously told me.
Even with Adeyemi’s hat-trick heroics for Dortmund, the former Danish international—now a TV pundit—managed to crack a joke, stating, “I’ll never forgive you for what you did to my boy today!”—before complimenting the forward on his incredible performance.
After the game, Schmeichel Sr. opened up about their talk and shared some advice he provided his son in the wake of the humiliating loss. Schmeichel senior acknowledged, “I spoke with Kasper after the game.” “I said, ‘This was just a bad day at the office.'” You give up seven goals. I’ve only ever done this once, so you may conclude after the game that there wasn’t much you could have done to stop all seven, but I still gave up seven goals, and it’s my responsibility to stop the goals. You will undoubtedly have a peek at it.
“Accept it, move on, lead by example in the changing area, and assist others in taking this as a lesson.” Because, let’s not forget, Celtic has played incredibly well this season, and the team is incredibly optimistic. It was merely a terrible day at work, but you still need to process what happened.
