In light of Tomoki Iwata’s recent performance, Peter Grant explains what every Celtic fan is thinking.
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has recently had to rely on his squad due to injury problems.
Most notably, club captain Callum McGregor has missed the last few matches due to a calf/Achilles injury; however, he is expected to return after the international break.
Tomoki Iwata has been tasked with controlling the Hoops’ midfield from deep. Despite his own fitness issues during the first half of the season, he has emerged as an important member of the team.
Rodgers spoke earlier this week about the Japanese enforcer’s emergence in the engine room, praising his ability to fit in and perform well.
He stated, “With any player, it’s about getting a run in the team. He’s come in and done well in games when we have either moved Callum up or he hasn’t been available.
“That’s what he has been, a cover player for the squad. He’s done a really good job when he has come in. I’ve been really pleased with Tomo.”
The 26-year-old has made 15 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring one goal and assisting twice per Transfermarkt.
Of course, McGregor’s return to contention will be a significant boost for the Bhoys, but Iwata has made a compelling case for continued involvement in the campaign’s closing stages.
Peter Grant compliments Tomoki Iwata’s recent Celtic performance.
Iwata is rarely in the spotlight, playing a quiet but effective role at the heart of Celtic’s midfield with a straightforward approach.
Nonetheless, former Hoops midfielder Peter Grant has praised his work both on and off the pitch, citing his willingness to be a team player as a quality that can help him at Parkhead.
Grant stated [Go Radio Football Show]: “I said it a couple of weeks ago: I think he’s one of these guys that come across as quiet because his positional play is so good; I think he’s always in the right position if the ball comes out to him, he’s always available for a teammate.
“He doesn’t go for the worldy passes, he always moves the ball, so the ball comes into him, and he passes it quick, but I think against the ball, his positional sense is so good.”
Tomoki Iwata embodies the role of a Celtic squad player.
Celtic may have some high-profile players in their ranks, but you will never win silverware with just a small group of people, emphasising the importance of having quality in reserve.
Iwata has demonstrated his ability to step up, providing a foundation to build on in the six position with no glaring errors aside from an unfortunate handball against Heart of Midlothian at Tynecastle.
Iwata has done enough to earn respect at Parkhead, whether he starts or comes off the bench after the international break.
