“It’s a bit of a shame” verdict from Chris Sutton on potential Hyeongyu Oh Celtic exit amid Genk advances

Celtic have been silent on the transfer front since the window opened last week, as Brendan Rodgers looks to reorganise his squad.

Celtic re-appoint Brendan Rodgers as manager on three-year deal.

Parkhead is set to see a lot of movement in both directions, with some marginal players leaving to make place for newcomers.

According to speculations, Celtic attacker Hyeongyu Oh could depart the club this summer due to interest from Belgian side Genk.

Following the report that an initial offer from the Jupiler Pro League side was turned down, they are said to have upped their proposal for Oh, and it remains to be seen whether movement is made in that regard.

Chris Sutton has spoken out on Oh’s potential departure, which might leave Celtic with only one striker on the roster.

Sutton stated [Daily Record]: “Rodgers will know what he needs but he can add another striker to his shopping list as it looks like Oh Hyeon-gyu is on his way out. I actually think it’s a bit of a shame if he goes as there is a player there. Oh is raw and there is development needed.

“But he has a lot of tools and I like him as an alternative to Kyogo. He was overtaken by Idah in the second half of the season but he’s similar in some ways to the Norwich man in that he’s physical and can be a focal point.

“Clearly Rodgers isn’t so sure – and that’s fair enough. He sees the player every day in training and it’s entirely up to him. But letting Oh go means Celtic are going to be in the market for TWO new strikers.”

Oh has had some positive moments at Celtic, scoring 12 goals in 47 games despite playing second fiddle to Kyogo Furuhashi for the majority of his tenure at Parkhead.

Adam Idah’s loan exploits in the second part of 2023/24 hampered his chances of playing regularly. With Brendan Rodgers anxious to bring the Republic of Ireland international back to Glasgow’s east end permanently, it appears that Oh and the club will part ways.

Norwich City manager Johannes Hoff Thorup wants to assess Idah in pre-season before making a decision on his future. Regardless, if the Cork-born player stays at Carrow Road, Celtic appear to be looking elsewhere for strikers.
