Sunderland’s interest in the Aston Villa man may cause concern for this midfielder.

This month is expected to be a busy transfer window for Sunderland Football Club.

The Black Cats have been active in recent transfer windows, and the trend is expected to continue this month.

That’s because this is the first opportunity for manager Mick Beale to make changes to the squad he took over when Tony Mowbray was replaced in late 2023.

As previously stated, Sunderland were active in the summer transfer window, adding 11 new players to the squad, but Beale is likely to want to shake things up and add to areas of the squad that could be considered light.

Sunderland are interested in signing Lamare Bogarde on loan.
According to The Athletic, Sunderland are interested in signing Aston Villa midfielder Lamare Bogarde on loan for the rest of the season.

The Premier League club decided to loan out the young midfielder over the summer to give him more first-team minutes in senior football.

Bristol Rovers won the race, and Bogarde appeared in 18 games across all competitions for the Gas, though he fell short of his previous season’s performance.

Villa has decided to recall the player so that he can be loaned out again to a higher level of football.

The Athletic reports that the Black Cats are interested in the player because Beale previously worked with Bogarde at Villa Park.
Sunderland fans may be excited about the prospect of signing Bogarde on loan, but one player may be disappointed by the news.

Lamare Bogarde’s interest may concern Jay Matete.
When teams are linked with new signings, some current players will look at the potential deal and believe they will benefit from his arrival, while others will be concerned about their future.

In this scenario involving Bogarde, current Sunderland midfielder Jay Matete may be concerned.

Matete has been with the Stadium of Light since 2022, when he joined from Fleetwood Town. However, his time with the Black Cats has not been a successful one, as the 22-year-old has struggled to play regularly for the club due to injuries and a lack of opportunities.

Matete, a young midfielder, spent the second half of last season on loan at Plymouth Argyle, where he played extensively and helped the Pilgrims win promotion to the Championship.

Matete scored one goal and assisted twice during his six-month loan spell, averaging 0.10 goals per 90 minutes and 0.21 assists per 90 minutes.
During his time with the Pilgrims, he took 13 shots, three of which were on target, giving him a 23.1% accuracy and an average of 1.36 shots per game. According to Fbref.com, the 22-year-old made 25 tackles and 15 interceptions last season.

The midfielder has been unable to regain his previous form for Sunderland. Matete suffered a knee injury during preseason, and he has missed the majority of the 2023/24 season thus far.

However, he has since returned, playing for the club in Premier League 2, but the news of Bogarde’s interest could be bad news for Matete, pushing him further down the pecking order.

Sunderland are not going to sign the midfielder just to sit on the bench and not play, so if he does, players like Matete may find themselves unwanted or not getting the game time they deserve.

Matete will face another dilemma, as if Bogarde or another player arrives this month, the 22-year-old may be forced to leave the club, either on loan or permanently.
