Jim Harbaugh discusses the Michigan scandal: “I don’t apologize, I didn’t participate.”
Jim Harbaugh has had a busy first three weeks of training camp, dealing with quarterback Justin Herbert’s injury, overhauling the receiver corps, and adopting a new defensive system. But on Monday, the Chargers coach had to direct and face an alleged sign-stealing issue from his time at the University of Michigan.
Sherrone Moore, Harbaugh’s replacement as head coach of the Michigan Wolverines, is being investigated in connection with the incident. Moore is one of seven 2023 national championship team staff members accused of breaking NCAA rules.
In a prepared statement, Harbaugh addressed the problem.
“Don’t lie. Never cheat. Never steal. That was the lesson I was taught growing up. That is the lesson I have taught my family. I’ve preached that lesson to the teams I’ve coached.
“No one is perfect. If you make a mistake, you apologize and correct the situation.
“Today, I will not apologize. I had no involvement, knowledge, or complicity in the aforementioned charges. So for me, it’s back to work and an unrivaled level of energy.”
The Chargers are focusing on the recovery of injured players.
Junior Colson, Kimani Vidal, and Ladd McConkey are among the players who left practice with a trainer on Friday and have not returned. All is well, according to Harbaugh, who gave his customary explanation: the players are “working through something.”
Colson and Vidal conducted some work on the side. Colson, who had an appendectomy, is coming closer to returning, according to Harbaugh.
Prior to their preseason game against the Seahawks, Harbaugh stated that they intend to play some starters, although it is unclear which ones. He stated that choices will be taken on a case-by-case basis.
The Chargers’ practice on Monday was more relaxing, more akin to a walk-through, following Sunday’s heated joint session with the Rams. That provided Harbaugh an opportunity to provide additional feedback on the “scrimmage.”
“I thought it was an impressive day for us, the way I looked at the film,” Harbaugh told the crowd. “We were mentally into it. “There was a lot of energy.”
Rookie Right Tackle Joe Alt was thrilled to finally face someone other than his friends, stating that it was a pleasure to battle against a different squad and plan.
Alt, who switched from left tackle to right tackle in college, says the transition has been smooth.
Facing pass rushers like the Chargers’ Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack will hasten a rookie offensive lineman’s transition to the NFL. Alt identified their power and speed as challenges for him as a pass blocker.
Alt has also picked the duo’s brains, asking what they notice in his game and how he might improve his technique.
“They’re very gifted,” Alt added.
