Journalist: Newcastle’s Star Set For MLS Move As Club Makes Transfer Decisions
Miguel Almiron’s time at Newcastle United appears to be coming to an end, with the Paraguayan international likely to leave during the January transfer window.
With reduced playing time under manager Eddie Howe, Almiron has made just six Premier League appearances this season. Among potential destinations, MLS side Charlotte FC has emerged as a frontrunner, although negotiations remain ongoing.
Almiron’s Reduced Role at Newcastle and Interest from MLS
Almiron has experienced a sharp decline in playing opportunities this season, starting only one Premier League match back in October. Once a pivotal player for Newcastle, his role has diminished, making a move increasingly likely.
Charlotte FC, an MLS side that has pursued Almiron previously, has renewed its interest. According to GiveMeSport, the club is “in talks to sign Almiron from Newcastle after coming close to landing him this past summer.” Newcastle, reportedly seeking a transfer fee of around £8 million, appears ready to part ways with the winger.
Charlotte’s Exclusive Negotiating Rights and Almiron’s Preferences
Charlotte FC holds Almiron’s MLS discovery rights, granting them exclusive negotiating privileges within the league. This gives them a significant edge in the transfer race.
While Saudi Arabian club Al-Shabab is also interested, Almiron reportedly favors a return to MLS, where he thrived with Atlanta United before moving to Newcastle. For Charlotte to secure the transfer, they may need to offer a substantial wage package, as Almiron currently earns approximately £60,000 per week at Newcastle.
What’s at Stake for Almiron in Choosing His Next Club?
A move away from Newcastle marks a turning point in Almiron’s career. The winger joined the Magpies from Atlanta United in a then-record £20 million deal but struggled to replicate his MLS success in England.
Almiron faces two distinct options: returning to the familiarity and stability of MLS with Charlotte FC or pursuing the higher wages and increased competitiveness of the Saudi Pro League. His final decision, likely influenced by contract terms and career goals, will shape the next phase of his journey.
Newcastle’s Transfer Plans Beyond Almiron
As Newcastle prepares for Almiron’s potential departure, other transfer activity is gaining momentum. Reports suggest Manchester City is closely monitoring Bruno Guimaraes, with Pep Guardiola eyeing a possible £80 million move next summer.
Additionally, Newcastle has been linked with Tottenham’s forward Richarlison, though Spurs’ reported £45 million asking price may deter any immediate action.
How Almiron’s Exit Fits Into Newcastle’s Broader Strategy
Eddie Howe’s willingness to move on from Almiron reflects a broader ambition to revamp Newcastle’s squad. Offloading the winger would free up funds and squad space, allowing the club to pursue new attacking talent during the January window.
As the transfer window approaches, Newcastle’s decisions on Almiron and other targets could significantly shape their campaign and long-term strategy in the Premier League.
