Kieran McKenna, manager of Ipswich Town, has been in contact with Coventry City’s Ellis Simms after being linked with the player earlier this summer.
As they prepare to face Coventry City’s Ellis Simms on Saturday, Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna believes the striker would have been on the radar of the majority of Championship clubs this summer.
Coventry beat out the competition to sign Ellis Simms.
Simms had previously impressed for Sunderland in the Championship, but on his return to Goodison Park, he was unable to find playing time.
As a result, a summer transfer was always on the cards, and a number of clubs, including Ipswich, had been linked with the 22-year-old.
However, Coventry won the race to sign Simms, spending around £8 million to bring the player to the Midlands.
Despite the fact that they had sold Viktor Gyokeres to Sporting CP, it was still a significant sum for the Sky Blues, who also added Haji Wright to their attack.
How did Ellis Simms perform at Coventry?
Given the fee, Simms arrived at Coventry with high expectations, but it’s fair to say he hasn’t made the impact that many expected, scoring only twice in 18 appearances.
Of course, it’s too soon to write Simms off because he’s still a very young player, and his all-around game allows him to provide more than just goals.
However, there is hope that Mark Robins will be able to get more out of the player in the coming weeks and months.
Kieran McKenna had this to say about Ellis Simms.
As previously stated, Ipswich were reportedly interested in signing Simms this summer, but a deal fell through, and it’s safe to say the Tractor Boys haven’t missed the striker, as they currently sit second in the Championship.
However, the Ipswich manager still clearly rates Simms, as the East Anglian Daily Times reported after speaking with the manager, who claimed that most in the league would want the striker.
“McKenna won’t be drawn into whether or not Town were in for Ellis Simms, but big praise for the striker, who he saw play for Everton’s academy. Believes three quarters of the Championship would’ve been interested in him over the summer.”
Will Ellis Simms start against Ipswich?
Simms has started the last two games for Coventry on the bench, with Robins bringing him on as a substitute in the second half on both occasions.
The fact that they have won both games after previously struggling for consistency suggests that he will start on the bench again, but you can bet he will play some part.
What comes next for Ipswich?
McKenna’s sole focus will be on the big game, and despite Coventry’s position in the table, he will be aware that they present a significant challenge, especially now that they have begun to find form.
Nonetheless, Ipswich are a formidable home team, and they will see this as an excellent opportunity to pick up three points as they continue their march towards the Premier League.
If Ipswich beat Coventry and Leicester fail to win at West Brom, Ipswich will end the night as Championship leaders.
