Celtic F.C
Kris Boyd holds his hands up to Celtic fans as he admits a massive error of judgement.
Celtic escaped with a fortunate result against Hibs at Easter Road in midweek.
When Hibs equalised to make it 1-1 in the second half, they were on top and should have taken the lead with their chances.
Celtic let them in too easily and were far too ineffective in constructing attacks on the other end, particularly from wide positions.
The end result was fantastic, with Celtic remaining at the top of the Scottish Premiership. However, the performance was all too familiar this season: ponderous and nervous.
Fans have been angry at the Board in recent weeks, fueled by the disappointing January transfer window.
However, mouthpiece pundit Kris Boyd, writing in his Scottish Sun column, believes Rodgers should share much of the blame. And that viewpoint has led the former Rangers striker to admit that his assessment of Rodgers’ return to Glasgow in the summer was horribly incorrect.
He has also questioned why the Northern Irishman decided to return in the first place, claiming in June that he was initially uninterested in replacing Ange Postecoglou in the dugout [The Scottish Sun].
Kris Boyd’s confession to Brendan Rodgers
Boyd stated: “Celtic fans, I have a confession to make. Brendan Rodgers, I said in June, was a better replacement for Ange Postecoglou.
“For the first time in a long time, I’m going to admit that I made a mistake. I was expecting Rodgers to return in 2016/17 and take Celtic by storm.
“Instead, Parkhead supporters are seeing a very different manager, as evidenced by Wednesday’s poor performance against Hibs.
“Sure, Celtic won the game with two penalties, and it could be a crucial three points.” Yes, they remain at the top and could beat an improving Rangers team to the title. But, as I mentioned on Sky Sports, the result was a robbery.
“And judging by the reaction, that Easter Road performance has only made Celtic fans more concerned that Philippe Clement’s side will dethrone them. It’s clear that something is wrong at the club. There has been a significant drop-off from last year’s Treble-winning team.
“They are nine points and 21 goals worse off than they were after 25 Premier League games last season. But that only scratches the surface of a season that has raised so many questions about Rodgers’ return.
“When Postecoglou first left for Tottenham, the Northern Irishman privately stated that he was not interested. It’s unclear what happened to persuade him to return.
“I’m not sure what vision Dermot Desmond and the Celtic board sold him—but it wasn’t this.
“Watching Rodgers and Celtic this season has been like watching a couple give their failed marriage one last chance. The first time did not work out, and the second time appears to be a mistake.
“Whether they win or lose the title, it appears that the reunion will not last long. He went for the full Ronny Roar at Easter Road on Wednesday, and relief was written all over his face.
“I can’t remember seeing him like that during his long career as a boss. Rodgers recognised the significance of the victory for both his team and himself.
