‘Lacking intensity’… Michael Stewart believes that one Celtic player’s career is coming to an end.

Many pundits from across Scottish football have weighed in on whether Mikey Johnston will succeed at Celtic.

It’s a debate that has raged for years as the 24-year-old limps in and out of Celtic’s lineup due to injury.

However, with the injuries to Daizen Maeda and Liel Abada, Johnston has been given a chance in the Celtic team and has performed admirably thus far.

With Brendan Rodgers expecting more from his winger, BBC pundit Michael Stewart believes Johnston’s time at Celtic is coming to an end because he lacks one key component.

“He’s 24 years old now,” Stewart said [BBC Sportsound]. There’s not going to be many more opportunities if he doesn’t take this one.

“And if he does then Celtic have got a very, very good player on their hands. I think Saturday’s game sums up Mikey Johnston‘s career for me.

“The first half, even though he wasn’t playing, is like Mikey Johnston’s career for the last couple of years, lacking intensity.

“He came out in the second half and he added that to Celtic’s team. And if he can continue to perform like he did in that second half then he’s got a career at Celtic.”

Listen, the Johnston debate is well-known and does not need to be revisited. All the winger needs to do now is put in good performances.

If he does, all of his doubts about his Celtic future will vanish. However, with Johnston’s contract expiring in 2026, he may believe he has plenty of time to do so.

But, with Brendan Rodgers looking to trim the squad and Johnston still unable to command regular football at Celtic after eight seasons, perhaps the Hoops boss will call it quits sooner rather than later.

In other news, Hibs boss is furious after what Alistair Johnston told his players regarding Celtic’s penalty award last night.
