Major update on rule change Nottingham Forest’s Anthony Elanga and Callum Hudson-Odoi would love

The prospect of a major change in the offside law to favour attackers like Nottingham Forest‘s Anthony Elanga and Callum Hudson-Odoi appears to be receding after senior sources expressed doubts about the progress of trials.

As FIFA’s chairman of global football development, former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been a strong supporter of amending the law to allow a player to pass the second-last defender as long as there isn’t any “daylight” between them.

The Covid-19 epidemic had a significant impact on the earliest trials of the proposed legislative change in 2020. It has since been put to the test in youth competitions in Sweden, the Netherlands, and Italy.

Tuesday’s meeting of the football and technical advisory panels of the International Football Association Board (IFAB) is anticipated to provide an update on the continuing trials.

Two people with knowledge of the process, however, have separately told the PA news agency that they were unaware of any noteworthy developments on this matter. One of those people stated that they did not believe the trials were a top priority for the IFAB.

According to Wenger’s plan, a player would be considered onside if, at the time a ball is played, any part of them that may legally score a goal is level with the second-last defender.

It would be the most significant modification to the offside rule since 1990, when it was changed to allow a forward to be onside if they were level with the second-last defender rather than behind them.
