Manchester City and Arsenal are interested in Sunderland’s 23-year-old star, according to reports.

According to a report from HITC, Manchester City and Arsenal have expressed interest in Sunderland custodian Anthony Patterson.

Patterson, a Sunderland academy graduate, has emerged as a key player since joining the Black Cats’ first team. He caught the eye while on loan at Notts County, and he’s since played 105 times for the Wearside club’s first team, keeping 32 clean sheets.

The 23-year-old has been widely tipped to follow in the footsteps of the club’s former academy star Jordan Pickford, and has previously attracted interest from the Premier League. Over the weekend, top-flight giants Liverpool were mentioned in a Patreon report by Alan Nixon.

New claims of increased interest from top clubs have emerged. HITC claims Manchester City and Arsenal are also interested in the Sunderland custodian.

Manchester City are considering changing their backup ‘keeper, and Patterson is a shot-stopper “they have done their homework on.” Stefan Ortega Moreno, the current No. 2, has been reliable in goal when needed, but the 31-year-old is out of contract in 2025.

Meanwhile, Arsenal could sell Aaron Ramsdale, leaving the club in need of a new backup for David Raya.

Links to Liverpool, Manchester City, and Arsenal in a matter of days make for fascinating reading. Patterson is regarded as a top custodian with a Premier League future, and those at the top of the league are taking notice.
The opportunity to join a large club, likely with high wages on offer, could be difficult to pass up. However, if a move away from Sunderland were to occur, it may be wiser to prioritise game time. Patterson has been playing on a weekly basis in the Championship, and a promotion to the top flight will only help his development, but only if he is given adequate minutes.

Sunderland’s interests are undoubtedly protected if bids are made. Patterson is under contract until 2028, so they could charge a significant fee for his services.
