Manchester United ‘talk’ £38 million bid for Chelsea target as interest in star midfielder cools.

Manchester United are ‘discussing’ a £38 million move for Wolves star Joao Gomes, with the Chelsea target ‘high on the list of prospective choices’ as the Red Devils pull out of negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain over Manuel Ugarte.

Ugarte had been United’s top goal to partner Kobbie Mainoo in midfield since the start of the summer transfer window, but after Paris Saint-Germain refused to lower their asking price, the Red Devils chose to walk away.

PSG wants close to the €60 million (£51.4 million) they paid to sign the Uruguayan from Sporting Lisbon in 2023, but United, with a new Sir Jim Ratcliffe ethos, isn’t willing to pay that much.

According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, United will only pay the appropriate sum for each transfer target and will not delay negotiations until the conclusion of the market.

‘Discussions between the Premier League and Ligue 1 rivals have cooled, but PSG are unconcerned despite widespread interest in a transfer for the 23-year-old from other clubs.

‘Only if PSG reduces their request will the Old Trafford side be permitted to return to the table — but no progress has been achieved so far.’

According to Football Transfers, Manchester United has reaffirmed its interest in Gomes, who was linked with a move to Old Trafford in April. The Wolves star is also considered a potential option.

The article adds that ‘Chelsea also have their sights on Gomes and may accelerate their chase with the sale of Conor Gallagher to Atletico Madrid’ and that ‘competition for Gomes’ signature is heating up, with a transfer fee of over £38 million (€44 million) being considered’.

United have also been considering signing Sofyan Amrabat, who was on loan at the club last season.

The Red Devils decided not to make his loan move permanent, but they are thought to be in contact with Amrabat’s representative and may attempt to bring the Moroccan back to the club if Fiorentina’s terms are acceptable.

United are still interested in Monaco’s Youssouf Fofana, despite his recent agreement with AC Milan, according to a report from last month.

According to RMC Sport, Youssouf Fofana has agreed to a four-year contract with AC Milan, but the Lombard club must still negotiate with Monaco for the French midfielder’s transfer during the summer window.

‘Manchester United and another Champions League club are also interested in the French international, with a potential summer transfer.’

According to rumors in Italy, Monaco is “irritated” because Milan agreed on contractual terms with Fofana ahead of time but only offered €20 million.

Monaco attempted to persuade Fofana to join West Ham, who were willing to pay closer to his €35 million estimate, but the Frenchman declined.

Manchester United may prove to be more appealing.
