Coventry City
Mark Robins now has an exciting Coventry City weapon that has the potential to spark a serious play-off push: View
Coventry City are aiming for another top-six finish this season as they prepare to return to the Premier League.
Coventry City have won three of their last four Championship games, raising hopes of a strong promotion push this season.
The Sky Blues have struggled to maintain the level of competition that earned them fifth place last season.
Following their play-off final defeat to Luton Town, Mark Robins’ side had a busy summer.
Viktor Gyokeres and Gustavo Hamer, both key players, have left for Sporting Clube de Portugal and Sheffield United, respectively.
And, despite earning big-money deals for the second-tier club, which allowed Coventry to spend on replacements, the team has been unable to compete at the same level.
However, recent results have shown an improvement in form that is more reminiscent of the team we used to know.
A major reason for Coventry’s optimism
Callum O’Hare’s return to full fitness is a big reason why the team has found its groove in recent weeks.
O’Hare appeared in victories over Birmingham City and Plymouth Argyle, as well as a draw with Stoke City.
The 2-0 victory over the Blues was the standout victory for the midfielder, who scored both goals to give the team all three points.
In an impressive performance, O’Hare created six shots, had ten progressive passes, 26 carries, and completed both of his take-ons.
This was his second start since returning from injury, and it’s a good sign that he’s back to full health and firing on all cylinders.
Prior to his significant injury issues, O’Hare was regarded as just as important a member of the team as Hamer or Gyokeres, and his absence was arguably a factor in the team’s failure to achieve promotion last season.
Having him back to his best will be a huge boost for Coventry as the season progresses.
Inconsistent results have seen Robins’ team fall behind their opponents, with too many draws being an issue in the early stages of the season.
In games like those against Birmingham, the team’s lack of a killer instinct cost them all three points in games they should have won.
O’Hare’s match-winning performance should excite fans because he may now be able to provide the extra attacking threat that this team requires to compete again.
The gap to the play-off places is only five points, with Robins’ team doing just enough to stay in touch at this point.
Last year’s rise
The team’s performance in the second half of last season should be motivation enough for Coventry.
The team had a disastrous start to the season, with several off-field issues affecting the squad.
However, they improved dramatically in the second half and finished in fifth place.
This year’s field is more competitive, but that should give the club the confidence it needs to compete for another top-six finish.
Robins has also demonstrated why he is worth sticking with through thick and thin, as the manager has repeatedly demonstrated his ability to turn things around after a rough patch of form.
With O’Hare’s return to form, supporters may be hoping for a Premier League return in 2024.
