Mikey Johnston claims ‘frustrating’ circumstances led to his Celtic departure.
Mikey Johnston, a Celtic winger, joined West Bromwich Albion on deadline day for the remainder of the season and has already made an impact at the Hawthorns Stadium.
Earlier this week, the Republic of Ireland international scored on his first start for the Baggies with a smart finish inside the box, contributing to a 2-0 win over Birmingham City in the Sky Bet Championship.
Despite his trickery, Johnston has been a difficult player to quantify in a Celtic jersey over the years, with concerns about his end product and fitness issues weighing on his confidence.
Brendan Rodgers has previously stated that the Lennoxtown product must add physical bravery and ‘robustness’ to his game in order to become a first-team regular for the Bhoys.
Nonetheless, thriving away from the pressures that his parent club faces isn’t bad for Johnston at this point in his career.
Turning 25 this year, the attacker must act quickly if he wants to salvage a squad spot at the Scottish Premiership holders, though some will argue that this ship has already sailed.
Mikey Johnston reveals honest reasons for Celtic departure.
Before leaving to spend the rest of the season south of the border, Johnston was a bit-part player, recording two goals and two assists in 12 appearances across all competitions. Transfermarket.
The Irishman has now revealed that it was ‘important’ for him to leave Parkhead in January after a frustrating time trying to fit into Rodgers’ plans.
According to Johnston [BBC Sport], the Championship is an excellent place to advance one’s career. I wasn’t getting the minutes I wanted at Celtic; I was playing, but it was sporadic.
“It was frustrating when I’d play well and score only to be unable to play the next game. To be honest, it was important for me to leave Celtic, and when West Brom came up, it was a fantastic opportunity.”
Mikey Johnston’s comments about leaving Celtic are intriguing.
In truth, it would be difficult to make a definitive case for Johnston to start at Celtic given his inconsistent nature during his time in the senior squad.
Most people would agree, however, that if he could correct one or two flaws in his game, he has the potential to be a match-winner.
His comments are intriguing; however, in order to progress as a footballer, he must first consider his own interests.
In any case, the 24-year-old has the opportunity to gain valuable playing time in the West Midlands before returning in the summer.
