NBA rumors: The Mavericks’ position on another Kyle Kuzma trade pursuit
Kyle Kuzma’s past reluctance to join the Dallas Mavericks continues to resonate as speculation about his trade value heats up.

The Washington Wizards wing reportedly declined a move to Dallas last season, opting to remain a focal point for a struggling team instead of joining what he deemed an insufficient title contender. The Mavericks, however, pivoted successfully, acquiring PJ Washington and Daniel Gafford in a separate deal and ultimately reaching the NBA Finals.
Mavericks’ Current Stance on Kuzma
While the Wizards are reportedly open to cost-cutting moves, including potentially trading Kuzma, it appears unlikely that the Mavericks will revisit a pursuit of the 29-year-old forward. NBA correspondent Marc Stein commented on the situation in his Substack:
“There were some rival teams at Showcase wondering aloud whether the Mavericks, who are known to be exploring their options for potential frontcourt upgrades, might make another trade run at Kuzma this winter. But such a scenario was strongly dismissed to me.”
Dallas has evolved since their initial interest in Kuzma. Now sitting at 18-10, the Mavericks boast improved depth and have leaned on Klay Thompson as a reliable secondary scorer and 3-point shooter. Kuzma’s declining performance and injury troubles this season further diminish his appeal.
Kuzma’s Struggles This Season

Kuzma’s once-promising trajectory has stalled, with his production dipping significantly. After a strong 2023-24 campaign, he is now averaging 15.8 points per game on 42% shooting across just 12 appearances. He has also missed nine consecutive games due to a rib sprain, leaving his trade value uncertain.
While some Mavericks fans may revisit his earlier refusal to join Dallas, his experience as a title-winning role player could still attract suitors.
Other Potential Suitors for Kuzma
The Sacramento Kings have emerged as a potential destination for Kuzma. Despite their 5-10 slump, the Kings may revisit previous interest in the versatile forward, as Stein noted:
“Sacramento has also been mentioned as a team that could revisit past interest in Kuzma, but it remains to be seen if the versatile 6-foot-9 forward indeed emerges as a true Kings target this winter.”
However, Kuzma’s recent injury and inconsistent performances could complicate Sacramento’s decision-making. A return to form could boost his trade appeal, but his ability to impact the court before the Feb. 6 trade deadline remains in question.
Wizards’ Future and Kuzma’s Trade Outlook
The Wizards, languishing at 4-22, appear eager to move forward without Kuzma, likely in hopes of acquiring future assets to rebuild their roster. Kuzma’s inability to spark a turnaround in Washington suggests that both parties are ready to part ways.
Yet for Dallas, the chapter on Kuzma seems closed. With greater depth and a clearer path to title contention, the Mavericks are focusing their efforts elsewhere, leaving the Wizards to explore other opportunities for their embattled forward.
