Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimaraes is one booking away from serving his second Premier League suspension of the season.

Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon is just two bookings away from a two-game suspension. Guimaraes received his ninth booking of the season in Newcastle’s 3-2 home loss to Manchester City last month.

While the Brazilian has gone two games without a booking heading into Saturday’s match against Nottingham Forest (5:30pm kick-off), he is still one yellow card away from a two-game ban.

Gordon received his eighth booking of the season after a stoppage-time foul in the 3-1 victory over Aston Villa. The 22-year-old has since suffered an ankle injury that will keep him out of Saturday’s game, but he is still at risk of suspension.

Gordon and Guimaraes were already suspended for one match earlier this season after picking up five yellow cards in Newcastle’s first 19 Premier League games. Kieran Trippier was also given such a suspension.

Newcastle has now played 23 Premier League games, and the suspension threshold has been reduced to 10 yellow cards with a 32-match cut-off point. As a result, any player who receives 10 yellow cards between now and a club’s 32nd match of the Premier League season will be suspended for two matches.

As a result, Guimaraes must avoid picking up another booking in each of Newcastle’s next nine league games or face a two-game suspension, while Gordon must avoid another two bookings during the same period. Gordon’s injury absence may help him avoid a suspension.

When asked about Guimaraes’ potential yellow card ban, Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe believes bookings are simply a result of the midfielder performing at his best.

“I think he has to play in that line,” Howe said. “He’s the type of player that has to be emotional and committed to produce his best performances.

“I think he’ll be frustrated with some of the bookings he’s picked up this year but that’s all part of the learning process. He’s in a dangerous place for us and we don’t want to lose him, we’re desperate for him to stay available.

“I hope he can keep his emotions under control and we can get through this period because he’s such a vital player. The bits he did towards the end of the Luton game, the cross for Kieran and the cross for Jacob [Murphy]’s chance at the end of the game was an incredible bit of play.”

The fact that Newcastle has failed to win all seven of the games the midfielder has missed since his arrival over two years ago highlights Guimaraes’ importance to the club.

Trippier, Sean Longstaff, and Joelinton have all been booked five times.

Jamaal Lascelles has four bookings this season, compared to Fabian Schar and Dan Burn’s three. Sandro Tonali has two Premier League bookings, while Miguel Almiron, Harvey Barnes, Sven Botman, Tino Livramento, Matt Ritchie, Matt Targett, Callum Wilson, Lewis Hall, Lewis Miley, Jacob Murphy, and Martin Dubravka have each received one.
