Nice bonus on its way to Celtic from €140 million UEFA pool this summer.
Celtic will receive a share of UEFA’s Club Benefits Programme this summer as a direct result of their participation in the EURO 2024 competition.
Callum McGregor, James Forrest, Anthony Ralston, and Greg Taylor have been named to Steve Clarke’s Scotland squad for their trip to Germany.
UEFA has put aside €140 million for rewards to clubs with participating players, a 7.7% increase over a similar programme in 2020. [UEFA]
That means that for every day Celtic’s four Scottish players train and compete in the tournament, the club will receive a small sum of money.
There are no huge sums here, but, like when Bhoys stars play in the World Cup, it’s a nice little extra for the club, especially given the minimal prize money available in Scottish football.
How much will Celtic make from UEFA’s EURO 2024 scheme?
Based on the 7.7% rise from 2020, each player in the event will receive around €9,400 for each day they participate. That window extends from ten days before their country’s first match to the day after they are eliminated or win the competition.
For example, if Scotland merely makes the group stage, each of their Celtic representatives will earn €188,000 over the course of 20 days in Germany.
Multiplying by four yields a total payment of €752,000 to the Bhoys, or around £634,000 at today’s exchange rate. If Scotland advances out of their group, extra money will be added to the final sum.
Many Celtic fans will not need another incentive to cheer on McGregor and his teammates, but if you do, here it is!
What we really want to see is these guys proving their value at the highest level and getting experience in such high-stakes games.
It only helps them in their ambition to learn, improve, and progress as Bhoys players, especially with the prospect of returning to Champions League action next season.
