‘No way’ Brendan Rodgers accepted or was the one who signed 23-year-old for £3 million says Kenny Miller

Celtic’s center-back situation has taken unexpected turns since the start of the season.

Who would have guessed that Liam Scales, who spent last season on loan at Aberdeen, would be one of Celtic’s most important players by the New Year, partnering Stephen Welsh against Rangers?!

While two separate injuries to Cameron Carter-Vickers have contributed, the disappointment of summer signings such as Gustaf Lagerbielke and Maik Nawrocki is another factor.

Kenny Miller told Clyde 1 that there is ‘no way’ Brendan Rodgers accepted or was the one who signed the Sweden international for £3 million in the summer.

Gustaf Lagerbielke did start Celtic’s 1-0 win at Ibrox at the start of the season, but he looked suspicious and hasn’t played since.

There are now rumours that he may be leaving in January, which begs the question of who allowed this signing to take place.

If it had been Brendan Rodgers, the Celtic manager would have given the 23-year-old time to prove himself, but as Kenny Miller pointed out, that is clearly not the case.

“Three centre-backs have come in and I know there have been an injury to Nawrocki,” Miller said.

“But three centre-backs have come in during the summer and none of them have played effectively. You went to two academy products in an Old Firm game, with Scales and Welsh.

“Lagerbielke from the Old Firm game at Ibrox. I thought he looked really, really dodgy. He didn’t look up to it. Scales was his partner that day, he was the one who looked like the steady chip.

“There is no way Brendan Rodgers signed him. No way that Brendan Rodgers signed the player five months ago and now he’s not good enough.

“If you have signed him, and you believe he could be this player, then you don’t write it off that quickly.”

Will Brendan Rodgers be supported?

Brendan Rodgers speaks as Celtic announce Gustaf Lagerbielke

For a long time, the Northern Irishman has spoken about Celtic’s need for quality and his desire to bring in proven players.

It’s still early in the month, but the January transfer window has been relatively quiet so far.

Perhaps when players return to action, things will pick up, or, as is customary, during the last few days of the window.

If you’re going to bring a manager like Rodgers back to the club, especially after what he accomplished in his first spell, there’s no need to mess around; just back him up, let him bring in who he wants, and get on with it!
