Notable QB Coach Issues Strong Statement Regarding Browns OC Candidate

Published

on

The Cleveland Browns have decided to replace offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt.

Since his departure, speculation has swirled about who the potential replacement will be.

In addition to experienced coaches like Tim Kelly and others, another name is very much in the running.

According to multiple sources, including Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the Browns plan to interview Jerrod Johnson, the current quarterbacks coach for the Houston Texans.

While there are mixed feelings about Johnson’s candidacy as offensive coordinator, Elite 11 quarterback coach Quincy Avery believes that becoming offensive coordinator is just the first step for Johnson.

Avery has had the opportunity to coach a number of NFL quarterbacks, including Deshaun Watson of the Browns and Jalen Hurts of Philadelphia Eagles.

As a result, he knows what to look for in other quarterback coaches, and he believes Johnson has the potential to make it big.

If his work with the Texans’ C.J. Stroud is any indication of his full coaching abilities, it’s difficult to argue with Avery.

At the same time, being the quarterback’s coach is the most responsibility Johnson has ever had as a coach, and he’s only been doing it for a year.

Because of his lack of experience, it is unsurprising that not everyone supports Johnson’s hiring.

We’ll learn more after Johnson interviews with the Browns this week, as well as who else could be a candidate.
