It finished 1-1 at full-time at the City Ground in the second round tie. But Nuno Espirito Santo’s side lost 4-3 on spot-kicks.

With just 18 seconds remaining, the Reds found themselves behind, which was the worst possible start for them. The Magpies jumped ahead early on when rookie custodian Carlos Miguel made an initial save to stop Alexander Isak, but he was unable to stop Joe Willock’s follow-up.
However, Forest gave a favourable response. With the exception of the first minute or so, they played well in the first half and appeared dangerous going forward.

Just before halftime, Taiwo Awoniyi headed a Jota Silva cross over and then headed a Ramon Sosa free kick. As the hosts put pressure on their opponents, both wingers took a shot.

Still, there were moments of nervousness for the Reds in the back. Miguel kept his team in the game by blocking Sandro Tonali and Miguel Almiron in the first half.

Shortly after the restart, the home team scored an equaliser, so those saves were crucial. After Alex Moreno’s throw-in was flicked in, Jota was there to lash the ball in.

Forest persevered in trying to find a winner, but in the end became weary. Miguel had to make an incredible late save to deny Lewis Hall and send the game to penalties.
