Scotland’s Scott McKenna has been linked to Celtic over Rangers this summer, according to Stevie Clifford, despite the defender’s preference for Nottingham Forest.

Clifford expressed his lack of confidence in the Light Blues’ ability to sign the 27-year-old, who has been on loan at FC Copenhagen in Denmark, in an interview with The Rangers Review [May 21, 8:30].
In order to overcome their fierce rivals and take back the top spot in Scotland, Rangers will need to make a number of astute additions. McKenna would be a promising addition to any team playing north of the border.

Clifford acknowledged, “If [McKenna] has to choose between Celtic and Rangers, he’s going one place, and that’s not Rangers.”

“I do hope we would go a little farther than the obvious Scottish guy who’s not that great. I have to say no.
Rangers after targets on the defence

If Rangers are to perform well in the upcoming season, they will need to bolster crucial areas of the team, particularly the back, and Philippe Clement is aware of how critical it is to stay up with Celtic.

Despite their success in cup competitions and in Europe, two seasons under Clement of finishing behind the old enemy would be considered failure. Recently, defensive players Josh Doig of Sassuolo, who is also wanted by Celtic, and Jose Cordoba of Levski Sofia have been linked to the team.
The fact that McKenna is a seasoned Scottish international with Premier League and European experience—and who, at 27, brings a strong balance of experience and retention of at least some future value—remains, despite Clifford’s disapproval of the player.

Having grown up in Scotland and played for Aberdeen for many years, McKenna is well-versed in the league and now seems like a good time to try his hand at winning the Scottish title.
