Paul Lambert tells Callum McGregor what he needs to get to the ‘next level’ at Celtic
Callum McGregor is more than just Mr. Consistent for Celtic; he is also a player who rises to the occasion.
Donning the Celtic armband has certainly added to the midfielder’s workload, but he has handled it well.
The 30-year-old lacks the personality of Scott Brown, but one thing is certain: he plays with the same bravery that the basketball legend did.
Paul Lambert believes Callum McGregor is ‘under the radar’ and that if Celtic were without him, the team would face ‘difficulty’, according to The Scottish Football Podcast.
As previously stated, the skipper is a big-game player; just look at his two games against the Rangers this season.
He ran the show at Ibrox, where Brendan Rodgers won, and he was recently named Man of the Match at Parkhead.
Callum McGregor’s value to Celtic
“I think Callum is the one who makes them tick really,” Lambert went on to say. “I believe Celtic have always had that type of player in the past, and they require someone to take the game. He has done exceptionally well.
“I believe Callum’s next step is to consistently perform well in Europe, particularly at the Champions League level. That’s where you want to put your stamp on it. “But he is the catalyst for it.”If he is not present, I believe the team will have a much more difficult time. He plays the game cleverly, and his brain gets him to places faster than his legs because he can read the game.
“He’s great on the back foot. He receives the ball at the half-turn. Looks even before the ball reaches him, which is always a good sign for a midfielder. If you make the game appear simple, you know you’re a great player. He probably flies under the radar for a lot of people because Kyogo scores a lot of goals and such.”
Celtic following the break.
The team will return to Premiership action at the end of the month, sandwiched by a cup game against Buckie Thistle.
There is still a chance for the team to win a double this season, which would be a fantastic return for Rodgers, who is still finding his feet.
Yes, the Bhoys did admirably well under Ange Postecoglou, but Rodgers wants his own players and fingerprints on the team now.
That is why Rapid Vienna winger Nicolas Kuhn may be joining, with more expected this month.
