Peter Schmeichel gives a hint about Kasper’s Celtic future.
Kasper Schmeichel, 37, joined Celtic this summer, but his father, football legend Peter Schmeichel, believes age is just a number.
Despite his relatively short-term contract (one year with the option for a second), Kasper’s early performances indicate he is far from slowing down. In fact, he has yet to concede a goal in the SPFL, which has garnered attention.
In an interview with Danish outlet Ekstra Bladet, Peter Schmeichel discussed his son’s potential longevity, dismissing the notion that Kasper is nearing the end of his career. “Whether you’re 14 or 40, it doesn’t matter if you help the team win,” said the former Manchester United custodian, emphasising that age is irrelevant as long as a player contributes at a high level.
Peter, who has experience playing top-level football well into his thirties, went on to say, “I watch every eternal match that my son plays, and I see no difference between now and ten years ago.” Kasper’s enthusiasm for the game is palpable, and there appears to be little chance of him slowing down anytime soon.
The former Premier League winner has had an excellent start to his Celtic career, keeping a clean sheet in every league game thus far. His arrival has brought a sense of calm and leadership to the backline, establishing him as a key figure in the team.
“For me, it doesn’t feel like it’s towards the end. It doesn’t, so there’s nothing sad about it. I think the focus must lie somewhere else entirely,” Peter added, implying that Kasper’s future should be viewed with optimism rather than concern.
Given his current form, Schmeichel could easily stay at Parkhead past this season. “I see many, many, many good years ahead of him,” Peter said, emphasising his son’s ability to continue performing at a high level for years to come.
While some questioned Schmeichel’s ability to adapt to the demands of Scottish football at the age of 37, he has so far proven himself. He hasn’t been tested much, but he made some impressive saves in the recent Glasgow Derby.
With his experience and pedigree, the Danish international appears to be more than capable of continuing to shine, giving Celtic fans hope that their new number one will be a long-term asset, despite his age.
