The Athletic reported that Peterborough were in talks with an unnamed Premier League team about the 21-year-old defender’s transfer.

Edwards has been a standout player in League One over the last few seasons. He made his club debut at the age of 17 and has previously been called up to England’s under-20 squad.

Soon after, Alex Crook of talkSPORT reported that Southampton were in talks with the third-tier club about a deal for Edwards.

According to the former outlet’s reporting, other clubs besides the one with which they are currently in talks are also interested in the 21-year-old, but there is hope that an agreement can be reached between the current negotiating parties to transfer the young defender.

MacAnthony is undoubtedly more active on social media than other EFL chairmen. He has his own podcast where he has openly discussed his club’s dealings, albeit not in minute detail, but to a greater extent than others.

Under Crook’s report on the Saints’ interest in Edwards, one football fan wrote, “@DMAC102 will let us know.”

MacAntony responded by saying, “Ignore the noise, price quotes, clubs named. It’s transfer season so this stuff is non stop. We won’t be talking club names re transfers.

“It unsettles players, makes clubs we try to acquire players from think we have Brewsters Billions to spend (we don’t). None of it is helpful lol.”

A Premier League move for Ronnie Edwards seems inevitable.

The language used by the Posh chairman in his X post did little to refute Crook’s and The Athletic’s claims that his club is in talks with a Premier League team.

Reporters like Crook and Adam Leventhal, who broke the news for the now-New York Times-owned online publication, tend to be not far off the mark with a lot of things. So, even after MacAnthony’s comments, it seems safe to assume that the reports contain some truth.

This is the Peterborough model, after all. Develop young talent into brilliant prospects, sell them for a good price, and repeat the cycle. Edwards is widely regarded as the best of the bunch to have emerged from this factory of young football players.

He has been a rock at the back for United in the last two seasons, both of which saw them make the playoffs.

Edwards possesses all of the fundamental qualities that a central defender should have in today’s game. Strong on and off the ball, with the ability to cover ground quickly and read situations effectively.

The EFL has proven to be an excellent development ground for young players. This lad has been playing at this level, and thriving, since he was a teenager. He was a consistent performer even when they were in the Championship in the 2021-22 season.

He has the ability to play at the highest level, similar to Jarrad Branthwaite and Adam Wharton in recent years. It was only a matter of time before a world-class team tested that theory.
