Rangers advanced to the last 16 of the competition after defeating Real Betis 3-2 in Seville on Thursday to take first place in Group G.

It was the first time in Europe that a Rangers team had won an away game against Spanish opposition, and it was Betis’ first home defeat of the season after drawing with Real Madrid earlier in the month.

Clement has now gone 13 games unbeaten since replacing Michael Beale, but the Belgian understands that silverware is the true litmus test for Rangers managers, and he has the opportunity to succeed on his first try.

Rangers face an Aberdeen team that has won seven of the last four league meetings between the clubs.

On Thursday, the Dons completed their Europa Conference League campaign with a 2-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt, the team that defeated Rangers in the 2022 Europa League final.

When asked what his own team’s result and performance could mean for his team heading into Sunday’s game, Clement replied, “Nothing.” It makes no difference to me whether we won or lost. It’s a completely different game.

“Of course, it will boost our confidence, but we must remain grounded.” But the biggest benefit is that everyone in the locker room believes that if they stick together and work hard, they will be rewarded. But it’s still just one football game.

“We are going to go really hard to win this first trophy but we need to be humble also.”

Clement did admit that his team’s victory on Thursday would set a new standard.

“There were a lot of records to break,” said Clement, whose team took the lead three times against Betis, the last of which came in the 78th minute thanks to Kemar Roofe.

“It’s a little bit like if you go to the Olympics and you do the high jump and you put the bar that high that everybody thinks ‘that’s impossible to do it’. And you jump over it.

“And that’s what the boys did, by doing the right things with and without the ball, being brave, never giving up and showing quality on the ball.

“This needs to be a reference for the rest of the season – to stick together and you see we can do amazing things together.”

In other new, Barry Robson insists that Aberdeen do not fear Rangers.
